"We must make the pledge that we will always march ahead; we will not turn back" MLK Speech.
How quickly we assume that Martin Luther King Jr. stood on that stage 50 years ago, preaching only on racial equality. The battle he was fighting that day was so much deeper than skin color. King was fighting a battle against ignorance, violence, and hate. He spoke on the possibility of a bright future. A future where terrorism only existed over seas and not on our own soil. King envisioned a world of hope and possibility, a world of love and faith. He was a prime example of how to practice what you preach.
King is said to be one of the most influential leaders of our time. His words and voice moved mountains in society at that time. His followers were in awe of his courage and bravery to stand up and fight for what he believes in. King lead a movement that ultimately changed the world as we know it.
It is important for us as Emerging Leaders to reflect on this timeless speech made 50 years ago. It not exemplified some of the key characteristics of a what a great leader is but, it opens our eyes to many more issues that still exist today. Our generation is experiencing a new epidemic of bullying and gang violence. It is our job to step up like King did and make a change. It is our job to really ask the world where is the love?
