Metaphor of Leadership...
The feeling that I get from leading others is one unlike any other. It is very similar to the feeling I get when I am practicing my violin. The natural drive that I have to succeed in it comes within and when I do succeed, I know that my hard work has paid off. Practicing the violin can also be similar to practicing my leadership skills. There are many tricks and techniques that I have learned from those much older and wiser than me. In leadership, I constantly find myself in workshops and seminars on tricks to becoming a great leader. I will use these tips to "practice and polish" my performance as a leader to be the absolute best I can be at something. For example, when practicing a very difficult place in a piece of music, I am taught to slow it down, change the pace, alter the tempo or change the rhythm. The results being that when you go back to play it correctly, it is almost perfect. This is the same for leadership. We are often taught to change our ideas or perspective on a situation and in the end, it all works out for the best. These tricks are ultimately what has made me so successful in my career as a violinist and they are also what will help me to successful in my leadership opportunities.

What is it that makes my eyes shine?
After watching Benjamin Zander's video on what makes his eyes shine, I really began to reflect on what are some of the most memorable moments in my life and what made them so memorable. Although there are countless things that I could reference here, I really focused on three things that make my eyes shine: Music; the ability to listen, understand, and play music is a gift that I thank God for everyday. Leadership; my passion in life is leading others. and Service; giving back makes my heart swell with hope that this world can be a better place.
I have been playing violin since I was eleven years old. None of my family has ever had any musical experience or love for the art. It really came to me as a moment of chance and opportunity and I have never looked back since. I have grown to love how music makes me feel and how it makes others feel as well. I have really found myself in music, and not just the classical pieces that I play on my violin. I listen to the words and to the melody of songs and I really think about what it all means. I thank God everyday for this beautiful talent that he has given me.

This is by far one of the most proudest accomplishments of my life. I would not have been who I am to day with out being able to serve as last years students body president of my high school. The reason why I loved it so much is not because I got my own parking sign or because of the numerous field trips, but because leading others is truly my passion in life. I love to set the example and I love taking on major projects with huge responsibilities and others looking at me for advice. Leadership is something that truly makes my eyes shine.
I have had the opportunity to help make my community a better place countless times. Whether it be community trash pick up, collecting money to donate to various cancer projects, or just collecting books and cans to send to those in need, I have seen many things that give me hope that there are still people that care about the community. But what really makes my eyes shine is when people do for each other simply just to do it. No rewards, no incentives, just acting out of shear kindness that comes from with in them. It warms my heart to do for others. I have learned that this is one of the biggest reasons why I have such a big heart and I care so much. Service is what makes the world go round and that is why it means so much to me.

"We must make the pledge that we will always march ahead; we will not turn back" MLK Speech.
How quickly we assume that Martin Luther King Jr. stood on that stage 50 years ago, preaching only on racial equality. The battle he was fighting that day was so much deeper than skin color. King was fighting a battle against ignorance, violence, and hate. He spoke on the possibility of a bright future. A future where terrorism only existed over seas and not on our own soil. King envisioned a world of hope and possibility, a world of love and faith. He was a prime example of how to practice what you preach.
King is said to be one of the most influential leaders of our time. His words and voice moved mountains in society at that time. His followers were in awe of his courage and bravery to stand up and fight for what he believes in. King lead a movement that ultimately changed the world as we know it.
It is important for us as Emerging Leaders to reflect on this timeless speech made 50 years ago. It not exemplified some of the key characteristics of a what a great leader is but, it opens our eyes to many more issues that still exist today. Our generation is experiencing a new epidemic of bullying and gang violence. It is our job to step up like King did and make a change. It is our job to really ask the world where is the love?
